If you go anywhere near a Pride celebration this summer, you're likely to hear one of the acts compiled on Music with a Twist: Revolutions CD -- or possibly have some clever marketing giveaway (sunscreen, fan) with its logo thrust into your hot little hands.
If the idea people behind this disc -- full of songs by talented types who are out and proud -- are doing what they promised on the promotional side, you should be seeing some serious mainstream radio crossover success stories, too.
And in celebration of artists who long ago made the decision not to put themselves in the position of being mocked by Popnography et al. for trying to have it both ways, I threw a few Fast & Furious questions at any of the Revolutionaries who would listen. Here's what stuck.
(Click each name to go straight to their treasure trove/MySpace, full of music and photos galore.)
Out: What inspired your song on Revolutions?
Ivri Lider: I think most gay men and women would agree that, at least once in their lives, there's that one person you "fall in love" with, but you know it can never be. They might mess around with you or say what you want to hear, but you both know they'll never truly open up and "be" with you. It's the feeling of being rejected even while you're with the other person, because you know it's not really real.
Jesse O: I had started dating someone new. The song wrote itself because it was exactly what I was feeling in that moment. Yeah it's a little cheesy, but it's true.
Sarah Bettens: "Come Over Here" is kind of a coming out song. I wrote it while I was going through the process of finding out I was gay myself and I wanted to write a song of encouragement.
Who's your celebrity crush?
Dylan Rice: Sacha
Baron Cohen. He's got this deliciously demented humor and has a
gorgeous full hairy chest. I've got a thing for brainy, hirsute
types... I think it goes back to watching Magnum PI in those half-open
Hawaiian shirts, though I wouldn't describe Magnum as brainy per se.
Adam Joseph: D'Angelo.
Sarah Bettens: Sharon Stone.
Ivri Lider: George O'Malley [T.R. Knight] from Grey's Anatomy.
What's the best song to belt out in the shower?
Sarah Bettens: "Everytime We Say Goodbye."
Dylan Rice: "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green. When you sing the falsetto in the chorus, the cavernous acoustics of the enclosed tile bathroom make for excellent reverb. Plus you're naked when you're singing, so that's kind of exciting.
Ivri Lider: "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes.
Listen as they declare their shameless love for their favorite music and lay out a gay agenda after the jump...
What singer or group is most overlooked by Popnography?
Dylan Rice: An electro-rock band called Fujiya & Miyagi.
They're Brits who sound like the Stone Roses meets Beck. I haven't
heard a song in a long time that actually made me want to get up and
dance upon first listen. The lyrics are a sort of stream of
consciousness deadpan androgyny. My favorite song is "Photocopier."
Sarah Bettens: Sarah Bettens...or maybe Skin. She's from the UK and her previous solo record is amazing.
If there were a gay national (or international) anthem, what would it be, and who would sing it?
Jesse O: Well whatever it is, Beyonce would sing it, cause just about everything she sings becomes an anthem to me.
Adam Joseph: I think Chaka Khan already took care of that with "I'm Every Woman."
Sarah Bettens: "Come Over Here" by Sarah Bettens...and if that doesn't work out, maybe 'Silent Legacy' by Melissa Etheridge.
Dylan Rice: I'd like to [write] something corny and punny like "From Gay to Shining Gay" or "Fags of Our Fathers." Maybe it would be a militaristic showtune. I have a difficult time relating to traditional national anthems anyway. Most of them are war cries and flag worship.
Ivri Lider: "The Man I Love" sung by Rufus Wainwright.
What super-hetero anthem do you secretly love?
Adam Joseph: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana (not so secretly).
Dylan Rice: "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League.
Sarah Bettens: "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer" by Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes. [Ed.: Okay, it's official. I love her! Kenny Rogers!]
Ivri Lider: "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp. [Ed.: Ivri gets bonus points for picking the best straight love song ever!!]
What's next on your gay agenda?
Adam Joseph: I just released my second music video for a song called
"Faggoty Attention" (an ode to seducing str8 bois) and am I currently
working on my second album.
Jesse O: I'm shooting a video for "I Think I'm Falling In Love."
Ivri Lider: I just finished scoring the music for Eytan Fox's new movie, The Bubble, that's coming out in the US in September. I'm also ending a two-year tour in Israel, while beginning to put together my first all-English album.
Sarah Bettens: Getting ready to release a new record called Shine, club shows and festivals all over Europe and the States, possibly South Africa and Japan later in the year.
Dylan Rice: I'm getting ready to make a music video in LA for "The Lie" and scoring a short film for an old college buddy. [Ed.: Very cute. That'd be me.]
