I know half the country is still scratching their heads about The Sopranos finale, but I am so freaking excited about the return of Big Love to HBO tonight that I might need to go out and get married a few times myself.
Had Popnography been around during the first season, you would no doubt have heard me gush about the totally monogamous coupled-up co-creators, Mark Olsen and Will Scheffer, who hatched the idea for the show driving home from a family vacation. Scheffer said:
My initial reaction was "Yuck! That's not an idea that's going to create a mass audience for television!" We actually had a big fight about it in the car ride back to New York City. Mark said, "I'm going to prove to you that this is a good idea!"
The result was a smart, emotional, very modern family drama -- with more than a little queer subtlety thrown in for good measure. (There were the more-than-sisterly wives married to Bill's right-hand-man, for example, busily playing footsie. There's oldest daughter Sarah and her curiously close relationship to best friend Heather. There's Prophet puppet boy Alby picking up a male hustler, only to flip out and throw the guy out of the motel at the last minute. You get the idea.)
If you want some hints of what goods are in store for season two, you can read this review. I'm just looking forward to watching it all unfold week by week.
