Kids these days (and those of us who have yet to kick the habit of watching TV and movies about them) have a lot of choices!
This weekend, for example, they could have stayed home on Friday night to watch High School Musical 2, which did gangbusters on the boob tube, clocking some 17 million viewers Friday night, a cable record.
Or they could have found a way to sneak or lie or talk their way into a screening of the R-rated Superbad, which also broke box office records by pulling in some $31 million in three days. The sold-out show I saw on Saturday was packed with not-so-grown-ups in their 20s and 30s, all of us hooting and hollering and groaning at the raunchy-yet-sweet comedy stylings of Judd Apatow & co. (That's star Michael Cera up there, and somehow it never once stopped being shocking-funny when he was foul-mouthed.)
Don't let anyone fool you: underneath all the dick jokes, Superbad is a movie about what it's like to be a guy who loves his best friend and is scared at the idea of losing him to college, to cute girls, to the real world. And it doesn't shy away from the fear that the stupid shit guys do when they're scared of losing their best friend might seem, well, kinda gay. There aren't a lot of road maps for little straight dudes who could -- given the proper instruction -- become stand-up men who are happy and comfortable with their own mushy emotions, who choose to rise above asshole behavior.
> Here's some good clean family fun (with a twist): Check out the new promos for Ugly Betty. This video, with a remade Mika song special for the show, makes me even more thrilled for a Betty musical episode. This longer version has Mika and clips from last season. And here is the obligatory behind the scenes making of segment. (Please enjoy how hot Eric Mabius looks in his v-neck t-shirt, and how Mark Indelicato is sitting on Rebecca Romijn's lap.)
