The delightfully vulgar filmmaker who, quite frankly, changed our lives with cult classics like Pink Flamingoes and Female Trouble, gave NPR his kooky list of favorite movies. John Waters' list -- which includes blacksploitation tribute Baadasssss!, teen horrorfest Final Destination 3, and Crash, a 1996 film about people sexually turned on by car accidents -- isn't all that shocking, considering the crazy, trashtastic fare he, himself, has churned out over the years. Waters says:
"I like extreme art movies, I like underground movies, I like exploitation movies. So I like all genres. The only genre I'm not too crazy about is romantic comedies. I'm looking for extreme behavior that I might never commit but that interests me. And I'm always interested in behavior that I don't understand. I run to that."
The naughty little cineaste (and Out 100 honoree) does specifically call out a scene from Mike Kuchar's Sins of the Fleshapoids in which the director shows a close-up of an unflushed toilet set to ridiculous soundtrack music.
So praise for the potty, but poo on those syrupy, lovey-dovey Drew Barrymore flicks! Maybe that's the clue to understanding Waters we've always been missing.
