In which I convince Out features editor Bill Keith to do my job for me...

Golden Globe nominations came out at like 5am LA time today and announcer Ryan Reynolds looked just as good as you've imagined he would in the morning. [Ed. note: As hot as he always does! Especially when flanked by my Heroes girlfriend.]
Not a whole lot of surprises really, though I'm most pleased that Pushing Daisies got all of the love it did. Lee Pace and Anna Friel both got nominations as did the show for best drama. It's the most inventive thing on television, and contrary to popular belief, even I can handle (and secretly love) how precious it is. Pace and Friel are wonderful to watch. Pace, who was previously nominated for a GG for his trans turn as Calpernia Addams in 2003's Soldier's Girl, is up against Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin and Steve Carell, though, so it's a tight race.
Other surprises? Neil Patrick Harris wasn't recognized for his unbeatable supporting performance on How I Met Your Mother, and I didn't really expect to hear Jodie Foster's name called for The Brave One. And no best series nod to Brothers & Sisters? For shame...
The red carpet is going to be one hell of a runway this year with actresses Cate Blanchett, Keira Knightley, Angelina Jolie and Mary-Louise Parker all vying for awards, not to mention the eye candy that will be James McAvoy, Viggo Mortenson, George Clooney, Ryan Gosling and Mad Men's John Hamm.

I'm saving you from the fight we then had about how I think Into the Wild/Sean Penn/Emile Hirsch should have been on this list too and Bill says a lot of totally uninformed, cruel things and I cover my ears/eyes. I mean, it's just an awards show, right?
Plus the way it's looking now there might not even be any actors there to claim anything:
Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl says, "I'm not crossing the picket line, not unless I'm contractually obliged to do, which, for the Golden Globes, I'm not."
(You can distract yourself from the sad idea of an awards show without the pretty people by checking out a very glam Heigl in the new Vanity Fair.)
