No, I love you, bro. Illustration by Scott McPherson.
Because I like to give Popnography readers the benefit of the doubt, I'm just going to assume that if you didn't see Superbad in the theater it was simply a scheduling error. This may have been the gayest movie of the year.
See, for your reference, Out senior editor Matthew Breen's eloquent essay:
Their classmates, tormentors, even Evan's mother saw the signs: Evan (Michael Cera) and his special friend Seth (Jonah Hill) would soon be parted, and the separation would weigh heavily on each young man's heart. When Evan leaves for Dartmouth -- an exotic land rife with carnal temptation -- on the arm of the swarthy McLovin, will Seth ever find love again?
Or, as I said at the time, slightly less eloquently:
Don't let anyone fool you: underneath all the dick jokes, Superbad is a movie about what it's like to be a guy who loves his best friend and is scared at the idea of losing him to college, to cute girls, to the real world. And it doesn't shy away from the fear that the stupid shit guys do when they're scared of losing their best friend might seem, well, kinda gay.
Lucky for you, Superbad is now available in the comfort of your own home. The unrated, extended DVD comes out today, as well as one jam-packed with two hours of top-secret bonus materials they didn't send us for review.
Seriously, if someone out there isn't using this as seduction material for their mostly-straight high school best friend while home on winter break, I will be very disappointed. It's not too late to make him his own McLovin ID as a holiday gift.
