Back when I was just a young gay boy day dreaming about running off with the garbage man (seriously -- he was gorgeous!), I had a magical VHS tape onto which I recorded my three favorite music videos -- UB40's "Red Red Wine," Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" and Kylie Minogue's "The Locomotion" -- and I would watch them over and over and over again until my family seriously flirted with having me committed.
Years later I've grown apart from UB40 and Rick (though I sometimes catch myself falling for the occasional redhead and totally blame that on Mr. Astley), but my heart still swells to King Kong-sized proportions and pounds wildly against my ribcage at the very mention of Kylie.
The best thing about Kylie is that she consistently makes pure, unadulterated, pop music. Maybe it isn't music worthy of a PhD dissertation -- though you should check out the book La La La, which goes into great heady detail about the postmodern stylistic choices for her videos, tours, and overall image -- but come Friday night it'll certainly have your ass moving.
Which brings me to the new video for "Wow," the second single from her recently released album X, due to crash land in the US sometime later this year. Since we last saw Kylie, she has given up partying on this planet and beamed herself to a neon-lit corner of the galaxy where lightsaber stripper poles abound, stormtroopers take synchronized hip-hop dance classes in their free time and Ewoks shimmy in full-on hazmat suits -- just in case the hotness Kylie is releasing ever reaches dangerously high levels.
I don't know about you, but I feel flushed.
Oh, and here's the behind-the-scenes making of:
