I know how much you all love the touching, tragic and true story of a diva down on her luck. And you all know how much I love overthinking pop culture. And so do my friends! Here's my pal Megan giving Miley Cyrus the old sex lib treatment. I promise there's a happy ending.

Oh, Miley. You're so 15.
Miley Cyrus' alter ego Hannah Montana has been my not-so-secret obsession for about a year now, after one long Saturday afternoon marathon. The show is truly delightful in a young, energetic way, and I wish I'd had it around when I was what the kids now call being a tween.
The leaked MySpace pictures make me think, "Oh, Miley, way to be a normal 15 year old!" then, "Oh, jeez, Miley, way to be a normal 15 year old, ouch!" She's part of the first generation that will have to deal with the trials and tribulations of living a fully online life from the cradle to the grave. Those pictures will be in someone's cache when she has kids, when she's 50. But there's nothing about taking them that other 15 year olds haven't done -- and some have done much, much worse.
But, wait, oh yeah: she's a major star whose show has been on the air since she was pre-pubescent. A major star whose image is, presumably, carefully controlled by Disney and her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. Hannah Montana, as a show, is nearly asexual; the crushes Miley and her best friend Lilly have on boys are depicted using nonsense throwaways (think "dreamy"), nothing approaching lust. Those pictures of Miley are the complete opposite -- they're American Apparel Jr., with bonus lesbian implications.
I don't think she did this deliberately to re-assert control of her public body image or her nascent sexuality (a MySpace "friend" leaked the shots) -- but it still makes me proud that it also functions as such a declaration. Go on Miley, go out there and be 15.

And in the only way it counts out here in Hollywood -- money, money, money makes the world go round! -- Miley's totally getting her happy ending: "Walt Disney Pictures' 3-D movie Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour scored the highest gross ever for the big-game weekend with an estimated $29 million in three days."
