> I saw Heloise & the Savoir Faire -- Out's pick for our favorite new band at the South by Southwest Music Festival -- twice this winter, once in a bar in downtown LA and once at a club on the Lower East Side in NYC. Both shows were crazy energetic, a super-queer retrosexual mix of disco and synth-pop that rocked the houses. It was like stumbling into the world's coolest underground club -- circa 1978.
Check out my interview with singer Heloise Williams at Out.com. We talked about how the band got Debbie Harry to guest on two songs, their thrifty fashion sense and her gig playing bodyguard for the singer Peaches.
The album comes out in late April (finally!) but the kind folks in the band have put up the song "Downtown" (with Debbie Harry) for free download.
> If you or a friend are headed to Austin to catch all the other great live music, you might want a copy of our annotated guide to South by Southwest. (Even if you're not going, it's a good reference for the next time your boss drops an iTunes gift card on your desk.) We also run down the ones we'd go groupie for based solely on their sexy names.
> The Advocate Insider will be blogging from the festival (lucky bastards).
> Plus you can hit up RockOut, two stages with eight queer artists presented by Gay.com and The Advocate.
