In true soap opera fashion -- you say "family drama," we say "why split hairs?" -- Brothers & Sisters ended its très gay season last night with a fittingly faggy finale.
(Though we gave away the main event in our story about executive producer Greg Berlanti, I'll do the many "time-shifting viewers" a favor and put the spoilers after the jump...)
First, the gay stuff:
> Uncle Saul finally dropped the G-bomb, and Kevin's patient, understanding pep talk totally made me cry. (What, like this surprises you?) But it was even better for Saul's later revelation to Nora that saying it once (or twice) hardly does the job. Walking into a semi-secret family meeting and assuming that's what everyone's gossiping about, then announcing it again? Totally takes care of family business! But seriously, I am eager to see what next season we see of an older gay man (ducking) navigating outness for the first time.
> Even on a big gay show -- or maybe now and there especially -- the challenge of doing a special extra gay episode remains. I appreciated the many little ways we heard different characters comment on the various courage, love and commitment it takes for two people to pledge their lives to each other, and how it wasn't (for once, especially with Kevin Walker) about irony or sarcasm.
Then the other stuff:
> That gorgeous version of "Can't Find My Way Home" playing over the ending as Justin and Rebecca kiss is by acoustic slide guitar player and singer Ellen McIlwaine. It's a Steve Winwood song, if you were wondering, but my favorite has long been by Eric Clapton. This takes the crown.
