Spank offers some of the same ephemeral distractions as your typical gay street rag (e.g., seminude party pics), but it wallops the competition by enlisting an impressive roster of lensmen and writers to partake in the decadence.
Its New York City founders -- Sean Bumgarner, William Lynn, and Jason Roe -- call on their hip coterie to give the modest zine refreshing credibility: Pal Dale Peck supplies erotic fiction, while comrades Roberto De Luna and Billy Erb contribute sexy, arresting photography.
Though Spank harks back to the early-’90s zine explosion, it’s not simply the product of hazy nostalgia. Each issue is introduced at Lower East Side underground club the Vault with a rollicking bash, showcasing avant-garde artistes and documenting tipsy attendees as they ham it up for the camera. Butt magazine, watch your backside.
