Emmy and Golden Globe winner Estelle Getty, 84, died in her Los Angeles home this morning. According to her son Carl Gettleman, she had been suffering from advanced dementia. Getty spent nearly 40 years struggling to make it in Hollywood before securing the unforgettable role of sassy eightysomething Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls. (That made her, of course, somewhere between royalty and deity for any gay man worth his knitting.)
We'll miss you, Estelle! Thankfully Lifetime will remain our link to your silver-tongued lashings.
