> With tonight being Project Runway night we have to wonder what Michael, Nina and Heidi would say about the, um, fashion (?) Michael Phelps is sporting on this week's cover of Sports Illustrated. Turns out that donning eight gold medals at once is a lot of look. At long last the question of what Michael Phelps would look like as a drag queen with some wickety-wack gold-lined conceptual halter top on is answered. Sure, he's aping the famous Mark Spitz cover, but Spitz had an excuse as to why he looked like a Village Person: It was the '70s. Everyone looked like a Village Person then -- at least that's what our extensive historical research into Casey Donovan films has proven.
> As much as we want to be all rah-rah for China's moment in the sun, news that two women, Wu Dianyuan and Wang Xiuying, are being sentenced to "labor reeducation" for applying to protest the demolition of their homes fills us with pure seething rage. Did we mention that the ladies are 77 and 79, respectively? And that they are being sentenced to a camp for asking to protest? While China promised "protest zones" throughout the games, to date not one single protest has been permitted. These Olympics have been like that episode of The Simpsons where we see Lisa become president in the future and Bart gets China to forgive U.S. debt by questioning whether China is still cool. "China is still cool!" shouts the ambassador -- and in a sense, that's what these Games have been about. China wants to prove that it belongs on the world stage, but no amount of futuristic architecture nor high-tech fireworks displays are going to win over the globe when you're locking up old biddies because they're pissed off you knocked down their homes and forced them to live in slums. Not cool at all, China.
> Matthew Mitcham might be down, but he's not out. You might have read that Mitcham's Olympic dreams are over and we'll have to wait until 2012 to seem him get another shot at the medal, but it's not true. You can catch the 20 year-old Aussie diving sensation this Friday when he begins the prelims for the 10m platform. While he lost out on 3m springboard, expectations go up on this event: In May Mitcham took 1st place in 10m platform FINA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Need a refresher? Check out the series of almost moving pictures after the jump...
