"YAY!! I've never been a part of a group that achieved its objective before," reads a post made today on the Facebook page "Why Doesn't Rachel Maddow Have Her Own Show in MSNBC?" Long the darling of the netroots (and Popnography), Air America host Rachel Maddow replaces Dan Abrams slot on MSNBC starting September 8. Yes, Virginia there's now a non-glassy, openly gay host on cable news.
We first caught up with Maddow during the primary and followed her rapid ascent at the liberal-leaning cable news network and speculated when the network would get around to making her presence permanent. The news was first announced by Boris Karloff impersonator Keith Olbermann in a "leak" he posted on DailyKos. Olbermann told the Kossacks, "I have no idea who will start guest hosting Countdown. Took me five years to find her. Dammit! Why didn't I think of this! She can't be the guest host any more! I knew I'd forgotten something!" The official announcement came via the NYTtimes with Maddow saying "This is great; getting a regular cable show is something I've wanted." Well Rachel, it's something we've wanted, too. Congratulations.
More giddy Rachel-lovin' on Countdown in the video above.
