> Some of the world's most famous gays (and their friends) turned out in full force at Denver's Fillmore Auditorium for the Human Rights Campaign's "Rock to Win" concert. Scheduled to tie-in with the Democratic convention also being held in Denver, the fundraiser included performances by Thelma Houston, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, Margaret Cho, and Melissa Etheridge. A HRC blogger posted a slew of pics here and reports that the highlight of the night was a moving rendition of Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah" sung by Rufus Wainwright. The message? Haters beware! We're here, we're queer, and we're suckers for a crooner with a tender ballad! (Read more -- and more serious -- coverage of the DNC at Advocate.com.)
> NBC's President Gary Zenkel issued an apology for his Olympic reporting team neglecting to mention gold medalist Matthew Mitcham is gay and has a partner. The Australian diver came out shortly before the Games and then shocked the sports world by beating out the Chinese favorite for the top honor. International media outlets heralded Mitcham, including details about his partner, Lachlan Fletcher, and their life together in their coverage, while NBC kept mum. Even though an NBC spokesperson originally defended the network's decision not to discuss Mitcham's sexuality, Zenkel issued a statement yesterday saying, "We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham's story. We apologize for this unintentional omission." While we appreciate the gesture -- however slight -- we're still pissed that it had to happen in the first place. If NBC can find the airtime to show 50 volunteers using metal detectors to try and find the wedding ring Kerri Walsh lost while playing beach volleyball, then they can certainly spare four seconds of their commentator's time to say, "Aw! Look! Matthew's getting a congratulatory kiss from his partner! How sweet!"
> ABC is putting its pie where its mouth is and taking its Pie Hole Mobile on a cross country tour to promote the second season of Pushing Daisies. Fans of the surreal comedy will be able to sample free pie at the roaming replica of the show's famed Ned's Bakery, AKA The Pie Hole, served by a charming set of restaurant staff (read: actors yucking it up for our amusement) and watch clips on Plasma televisions. But wait! The fun doesn't stop there. Guests of the Pie Hole Mobile will also receive Pushing Daisies branded goodies like fridge magnets, spatulas, and and pie-cutters. (Sadly it doesn't seem you can win Lee Pace.) Soon you'll be able to track the traveling bakery on the Pushing Daisies Touch of Wonder Tour microsite, and the full list of dates for each stop on the promotional tour can be found here. Free pie, free utensils, and we get to keep repeating the incredibly dirty sounding phrase "Pie Hole" over and over again? We'll save you a stool in Times Square on September 29th.
