GLSEN -- the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network -- recently teamed up with the Ad Council to create the first national multimedia PSA campaign aimed to address the use of anti-queer language -- like the phrase "that's so gay!" -- among teens. A new survey by the group reveals that three-quarters of LGBT teens report hearing slurs such as "faggot" or "dyke" frequently or often. While we are pro calling things "gay" (or even calling a faggot a faggot, or a dyke a dyke), we're definitely anti using any of those words where "fugly" or "totes ridic" or "STFU" would suffice.
The school group tapped famous FOG (friend-of-gays) Hilary Duff -- who chastises two teenage girls in a boutique for calling an ugly top "gay" -- and comedian Wanda Sykes, whose just-released clip features her flipping the tables on a group of teenage boys (see below).
All the money in the world couldn't get us to go back to high school, but if by some cruel trick of fate we did end up in 9th grade again, it's nice to know that this time around we'd have Hilary and Wanda in our corner. And we're always happy to see glass closeteer Sykes continue to clock some community time, no matter what other labels she may dodge.
