Look: Donnie Wahlberg is NOT the kind of guy who would out one of his oldest and best friends without, you know, meaning to. "I wouldn’t backhand him," he told his hometown Boston Herald after an interview with a Canadian paper gave the impression that he had done, well, exactly that to his co-New Kid, Jonathan Knight. (That's Jon, above, with Friend of Lance Deborah Gibson.)
Donnie said mentioning Jon in the same breath as Lance Bass was not a shot at luring his lifelong pal out of the closet.
"That was an . . . out-of-context manipulation of my answer," Wahlberg told the Track in an e-mail. "I was referring to 'N Sync's management trying to copy us -- Joe the cute young Justin type, Jordan the dark and handsome JC type; Jon the shy and quiet Lance type."
So it was a "shy/quiet reference," Donnie said. "Not a gay reference."
You know what would be amazing? If Jon just quietly, shyly stepped forward to confirm. Unlike every other gay boy bander (confirmed or merely rumored), Jon was not actually my favorite -- that would be his brother Jordan, or sometimes Donnie, for which I blame peer pressure -- but we'd be happy to officially welcome him to the club all the same.
