I'm usually too busy indulging my own inner 15-year-old to stoop to explaining things by saying some drivel like, "If you're over the age of 25 you probably don't know who Jeffree Star is, and if you're under that age you probably have a pretty strong opinion about him anyway and don't give a shit what I say one way or the other." But, uh, if the high heels fit... (Here, old/unhip folks, read what we already said about Jeffree and the other boys of Buzznet.)
Anyway his second EP, Cupcakes Taste Like Violence, comes out today, released by his own Popsicle Records through Warner Music Group. The full-length is due out mid-next year. For reasons I'd rather not explore too deeply, it reminds me of being at the mall. But which mall? I did not grow up blowing time and babysitting money in any indoor shopping center with this kind of buzzy, dizzy, dirty dance music. I probably would have enjoyed adolescence a lot more if I had.
"Lollipop Luxury," the first single, is mostly about the never-ending quest to suck or be sucked (look, there's not really a nice way to put that, if I were even trying). There's an edge of self-aware irony there, too:
O-M-G, L-O-L
It's true that sex will always sell
Now it's time for you to go
So what? So what?
My favorite of these five new songs (and one remix of "Heart Surgery," off his self-produced EP, Plastic Surgery Slumber Party) is "So Fierce," a ridiculous but relentless demand to "let me hit this, so delicious." Decide for yourself at MySpace or iTunes.
