Fear not -- or perhaps be very afraid: Little Britain has been renewed for a second season. Matt Lucas (above left) and David Walliams, the stars of the bawdy British series which invaded American homes earlier this year, revealed the news yesterday at the DVD launch of the first season of the show. "We're getting a second series," Walliams announced, adding, "[Little Britain] was very successful on HBO, it got good viewing figures, grew reviews, everyone was really pleased."
Maybe not everyone. Some early reviewers found the pair too raunchy or just "too British" for American sensibilities, but the pair weren't fazed. "Tom and Mark those bodybuilders with the big muscles and their small... it's not for everybody but we thought it was funny," Walliams said. "We're always just trying to entertain people, not offend them, and I think if it's not your cup of tea, don't watch it."
Touching on the differences between American and British audiences in the Out's October cover story Walliams said, "It's done with a sense of fun, and because it's so over-the-top I hope people will appreciate that we're celebrating difference rather than critiquing it. All of [our characters] have their failings because they're comic creations, but you're meant to like them. It's done with warmth."
No word on when the show will begin filming again as Lucas is currently shooting the upcoming Alice in Wonderland flick with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but rest assured that when Little Britain returns it'll be as rude as ever. "It's always been quite edgy humour but you know in Shakespeare there are jokes about bottoms and farts, this is the stuff of life and people like that kind of thing," Walliams said. Bring on another round of poop jokes!
