In my eternal quest to spend every Sunday getting down with the high school elite, I hit the Knitting Factory last night to see Aerodrone, an LA-based electro-rock band that power-pop thrashed its way through a short set covering all the material on their recent EP. They're supposedly on the cusp of releasing an actual video for "Sceneboy," their insanely catchy, mocking song about some boys' love affair with hair, but with a fan video as good as the one above, there's almost no need. They actually managed to play along live -- and sync up perfectly with the video -- during the show. (Even the much more typical pop-punk openers, Red Car Wire, were better than 90 percent of their genre brethren I was pitched or saw at Warped in '08.)
No, wait, there's one good reason to keep an eye out for the official "Sceneboy" visuals: This band is killer hot, too, and sexy in a refreshingly mature way for still drawing such an excited, young crowd. (Think Cobra Starship, but somehow -- and I know this is weird to say -- almost gayer.) Singer Gary Zon kept jumping off the stage and slinking along the crowd while keyboardist and crowd controller "The TZA" turned synths into a full-contact sport.
And if you're still struggling to get into your week, go download "Hold Me Like a Microphone" right this second. Zon's sultry growl (very Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan) and the come-on lyrics made this track immediately jump to the top of my morning-after get-the-blood-pumping playlist.
Aerodrone is criss-crossing the midwest the rest of this month -- get tour dates here.
