A fair share of whiny gays have been lamenting the death of nightlife lately, but it's dance-floor crusaders like Róisín Murphy who give us renewed hope in the nocturnal scene. Turns out all you need is a damn good set of speakers to party your way into the next morning.
No music issue (at least for a gay mag) would be complete without its fashion-forward diva of the moment. U.K.–based, Róisín (pronounced "Ro-Sheen") Murphy, former front woman of trippy dance troupe Moloko, is Out's pick for said diva.
Murphy's second solo album, Overpowered, came out overseas to wide acclaim in late 2007, but it finally invades the U.S. early next year. The record is drenched in disco-nouveau anthems, a perfectly sequenced song cycle we guarantee will keep you amped into the wee hours. For Out's current fashion story, Murphy donned some fabulous frocks, including cheeky, feathery hats -- her trademark -- and headed into the future with her new pack of hypnotized followers.
Much like the models in the shoot, we think you'll find yourself captivated by Murphy once you get to know her M.O. She's smart, silky-voiced, and versatile -- and she doesn't give a flying Miu Miu heel what those bitchy red-carpet vultures say about her fashion choices. Heck, she's already performed at London's Fashion Rocks and become pals with Givenchy, Gareth Pugh, and Viktor & Rolf. Here's what Murphy says about her style in her interview over at Out.com:
I’m not trying to look like a musician, or convey how cool or skinny I am, how many drugs I take. You can’t get all that from looking at me. Fashion is just something I enjoy -- making images. I’m trying to be a work of art. I’m just a little girl in a closet.
For further proof that she's the diva to watch out for, check out Murphy's campy side in the John Waters-influenced video, "Movie Star" below, where she runs off to frolic with some real-life London nightlife fixtures, including DJ-party promoter-fashion muse-party gal Jodie Harsh (who plays her nasty mum). How often is a video reminiscent of both "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and Dawn of the Dead?
Then hear her at her sophisticated finest as she provides the vocals for the classy new ad for men's fragrance Gucci by Gucci, starring none other than man of the moment James Franco.
