While Pete Wentz may mouth off the most, we've been gratified to see all his Fall Out Boy bandmates sound their alarm this week about the passage of Prop 8. It made us almost as giddy as Kristeen Young in this email her publicists just sent out trumpeting a duet between her duo and FOB singer Patrick Stump:
"From the moment I first heard 'Sugar, We’re Going Down' I was a goner. Like all heart-stopping moments, I remember my surroundings clearly…Home Depot parking lot, in the band van, and I couldn't wait to hear the song again and again. The voice (that leapt out of the speakers and wrapped itself around my entire circulatory system) not only possessed the obligatory radio-ring, but had depth, flexibility, and made all the melody choices that break your heart while simultaneously making you feel like you can conquer all. When I wrote the duet, I knew that Patrick Stump was the very capable man for the job at hand. The song is about the duality of the human spirit. It's about a battle that a person has with one's self when at the lowest of low times. Lucky me, not only did Patrick's voice caress these oddly rhythmed melody lines better than how I imagined, Patrick, personally, seemed to embody the role. He embraced the song with focus and optimism, and was an actual lift of light to my often heavy (and…YES) depressed soul. I am so fortunate that Patrick loved my song so, and that he had no reservations about expressing it."
Now, we're big fans of enthusiasm, and we don't need gushing to get excited about Patrick singing -- the tracks he's loaned his voice, producing or remixing to all get big play on our iTunes, especially his recent quickie cover of Kanye West's "Love Lockdown." (Though we also have to admit the first time we heard FOB hit "Sugar, We're Going Down," all we thought was, What kind of gay-ass song is that?) All that still didn't quite prepare us for the totally weird awesomeness of the track, "That's What It Takes, Dear," produced by Tony Visconti (he was also the man behind the boards for the Semi Precious Weapons album we liked so much). It's like a souped up, Blade Runner-esque Amanda Palmer track, demanding and intense. Download it free here and decide for yourself.
It's a nice comeback for Kristeen -- with her bandmate "Baby" Jeff White she is known as KRISTEENYOUNG -- who was unceremoniously asked to leave Morrissey's tour 170 shows in after having, well, a sense of humor about sex, something the great Moz has never been known to possess. They'll be out on the road in late November and December. Get more at their MySpace.
