Out's Associate Editor (and occasional Popnog-er) Jason Lamphier and I traveled into the deep, dark heart of Brooklyn yesterday to visit the set of the upcoming Real World: Brooklyn. So deep, in fact, that after a 20 minute subway ride to Red Hook, we still had to trudge 30 minutes and got lost four or 18 times trying to get to the pier the house is situated on.
Once we finally made it there (after also being momentarily distracted by a discount store with the best, most romantic, and somehow simultaneously most maudlin name we've heard in a long time: "$.99 Dreams") we remarked that if there's one thing the Real World does right, it's location, architecture, and interior design. (Okay, three things, as it turns out.) The house has a sprawling view of the waterfront -- including a postcard perfect shot of everyone's favorite 305 foot drag queen, Lades Liberty -- and the interior is just as posh and indulgent as it appears when you're in your own home slumped on your cat hair-covered lumpy futon watching the show.
We spent the afternoon with several of the roommates (the PR people were kind enough edit our interviews down to mostly the queer members of the cast) and while we're saving the bulk of our encounter with the gang for a more comprehensive post closer to the January 7 debut of the show, we can confirm that this appears to be the gayest season yet. There's a homo, J.D., a bi woman (who now happens to be dating a man), Sarah, and the series' first trans roommate, Katelynn.
What's more, Chet, the Mormon, might be the gayest straight guy to ever grace the show -- our Popnog photog spotted him rocking out hard to Lady Gaga -- and another straight roommate, Ryan, spends the entire first episode engaging his gaydar to figure out who's queer before going through a coming out of his own -- as a military veteran who's recently served in Iraq.
Stay tuned to Popnography at the beginning of the new year for our exclusive interview with the members of the Real World: Brooklyn. And in the meantime, enjoy one of our favorite seasons of the show, the never-aired Real World IKEA:
