Patrick Wolf, the singer-songwriter normally most dependable for radiating giddiness and glitter, has had quite a year. Busy writing his fourth non-studio (thank you very much) 2-disc extravaganza entitled Battle, Patrick's also been getting into scraps, invaded the stage of an outdoor televised Christmas concert in decked out in red short-shorts, and got beaten up by security while snogging his boyfriend at a Madonna concert in London. Speaking with Electro Queer last month, he recounted his harrowing experience:
"…Three songs in, me and my man were kissing and there were loads of conservative straight couples around us that complained. And then the bouncers came up to me and said 'can you stop that, this is a family venue.' And then I said 'for fuck's sake' and they said 'oh you can't swear -- this is a family venue' when there's Madonna on stage going 'fuck you, motherfucker.'"
Maybe Christopher Ciccone was right when he said Guy Ritchie rubbed off on Madonna (in a bad way) -- this is the second report of police brutality at a Madonna concert. You'd think being fabulous (Patrick was sporting hot pants and a sequined hoodie at the time) at a Madonna concert, of all places, would be allowed, but perhaps we haven't quite reached that stage of enlightenment yet. Or maybe the security guards were just jealous of all the love.
So with all that drama, it's no wonder Patrick posted a worrisome blog on his MySpace page on Monday. Already disheartened by the music industry and its frustrating, old-fashioned cloak and dagger ways, he wrote:
"i came from being beaten up by a bunch of aggresive [sic] homophobic conservative two faced cunts at school and entered an industry that is rife with these people… this industry is for people made of steel.. im just made of flesh n bone."
The post has been since then deleted but the message stands and, refusing to bow down to Universal Records, he's severed all ties. Striking off on his own by utilizing a revolutionary new distribution process, Patrick's put the power in the hands of the fans. By buying stock in his new album on Bandstocks.com, fans get special privileges like exclusive merchandise and access to private events as well as 30% of all the profits. Unfortunately, at this time the option to invest is only available for UK residents, but we're hoping that'll be fixed so we can support Mr. Wolf too -- we want that new album ASAP!
